Welcome to the Bat Ecology Research Group
at the Doñana Biological Station
The main focus of our research group is on various aspects of ecology and phylogenetics of bats on the Iberian Peninsula. Bats are a beautiful model organism, due to their extraordinary position among mammals, having undergone a vast taxonomic radiation and extreme diversification, with over 1000 species worldwide. Special in mammals, they not only have evolved active flight, but also highly complex social behaviours, remarkable physiological adaptations, such as torpor and hibernation and they occur in almost all biozones.
Applying a hypothesis centered approach, however, we also conduct studies on other taxa and work in different biogeographical zones.
We are based at the Doñana Biological Station (EBD) in Seville, Spain. The EBD is a research institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, "Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas"). The CSIC is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Also, the EBD is a recognized Center of Excellence of the "Severo Ochoa"- Programme that aims at promoting excellence in scientific research in Spain.
